Abstract

Introduction: The normal development of adiposity during growth presents three successive phases: during the first year, adiposity increases rapidly; then, up to six years of age, adipose tissue decreases and afterward adiposity begins to develop again. The age at which this “adipose rebound” (AR) is experienced is an important predictor of long-term trajectories of body composition. In children with cerebral palsy (CP), the age of RA is not known.

Objectives: The aim is to determine the age of AR in children with CP according to sex and level of motor involvement.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. The sample was composed of boys and girls with CP aged 2 to 18 years from five cities in Argentina between 2016 and 2018. The 50th BMI percentile for age and sex was calculated using the LMS method. AR was defined as the age corresponding to the lowest BMI value recorded at the beginning of the increase in adiposity.

Results: 242 children were included, mean age 9.3 ± 4 years, 149 (61.6%) males, with a confirmed diagnosis of CP. According to the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS), Boys with GMFCS I-III and IV-V presented the age of AR at 5 and 9 years respectively, while girls with GMFCS I-III and IV-V presented the age of AR at 4 and 10 years respectively.

Conclusions: Compared to typically developing children, boys, and girls with CP GMFCS I-III present AR at an earlier age, whereas boys and girls with CP GMFCS IV-V present AR at a considerably delayed age. The present observations could be related to a lower adipose cellularity in most severe forms of CP.
