Abstract
Introduction: 1 out of 2 children with cerebral palsy (CP) has intellectual disability (ID) as an associated condition. It is important to determine the impact of this condition on the daily functioning of this population.
Aim: To compare the differences in the functioning profile of children with CP aged 2 to 18 years who have or do not have an associated condition of ID.
Method: Cross-sectional study. Work developed in stages. Stage 1: Training in ICF. Stage 2: Consensus for the definition of instruments to apply the core-set. Stage 3: Pilot test and adjustments to the instrument. Stage 4: Construction of the profile. The participants were children and adolescents aged 2 to 18 years with CP attending health and rehabilitation centers. Normal continuous variables were described as means with their SDs and discrete variables as percentages with 95%CI. Fisher’s test was used to compare the differences between the DI variable, with the categories of activities and participation of the abbreviated core set common to PC.
Results: 133 functioning profiles were performed. Mean age 8 (±4) years. Of the total sample, 54 (49.1% [CI95% 39.4-58.8]) participants presented DI. When comparing the categories of activity and participation between those with and without ID, statistically significant differences were observed in the categories of maintaining body position (d415), fine hand use (d440), walking (d450), moving around (d460), hygiene (d530) and eating (d550). Observing that children who present DI as an associated condition, mostly present severe or complete difficulty in these categories.
Conclusions: This study emphasizes the importance of evaluation and follow-up processes based on the ICF language. It allows understanding the impact that different variables, such as associated conditions with CP, have on their daily functioning.
