Abstract
Introduction: The basic sets of the Classification of Functioning and Disability (ICF) for children with cerebral palsy (CP) standardized functional assessments. In Argentina there are no known studies describing the levels of functioning of this population.
Objective: To build the functioning profile of children with CP from 2 to 18 years of age in Argentina, identifying functional needs and contributing to the improvement of assessment processes. Population: Children and adolescents aged 2 to 18 years with CP attending health and rehabilitation centers in 8 cities in Argentina (Jujuy, Mendoza, Córdoba, Buenos Aires(3) and Santa Fe(2)).
Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study. Work carried out in stages. Stage 1: Training in ICF. Stage 2: Consensus for the definition of instruments to apply the core-set. Stage 3: Pilot test and adjustments to the instrument. Stage 4: Construction of the profile. The variables were the categories of the core set for PC. Normal continuous variables were described as means with their SDs and discrete variables as percentages with 95%CI.
Results: 111 performance profiles were performed. Mean age 7 (± 4) years. 61 (55.4% [95%CI 45.6-64.8]) partic- ipants had Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFCS) levels I-III. In children with GMFCS IV-V, a severe problem was found in the mental functions of language, joint mobility functions and control of voluntary movements. The same is true for most of the activity and participation categories. For children with less motor involvement, the use of technology is neither a facilitator nor a barrier, while for children with more involvement it is a complete facilitator.
Conclusions: This work standardized the identification of functional needs and therapeutic goals based on ICF language, creating functioning profiles, which systematically allow comparison of needs at national level and the use of services appropriate to these needs.
