Abstract
Introduction: Breastfeeding (BF) offers multiple benefits for maternal and infant health; however, various factors are associated with its early cessation. Paternal support is a key factor.
Objective: To evaluate the influence of the father's participation in household and child care on the duration of breastfeeding during the first year of the infant's life.
Results: An analytical, cross-sectional observational study was conducted from 2023 to 2024. Mothers of healthy, young infants from the CESFAM(Family Health Center) Maipo, were included. An ad hoc survey, validated by a pilot test, was applied. Associations between sociodemographic variables, fathers' knowledge, and attitudes toward support during breastfeeding were analyzed.
Conclusion: The father's involvement in childcare is a factor associated with a longer duration of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding promotion interventions should actively involve fathers, encouraging them to share their responsibility in household and parenting tasks.
