Abstract
We propose a framework to understand, evaluate and to treat eating disorders. The pathophysiological process that leads to an eating disorder involves biological, psychological, cultural and social factors. But how do these factors interact to build an anorexic configuration, with its chronic course, its recurrence and frequent mortality? The proposed model indentifies risk factors, forms estrategies for treatment and when to seek a specialist. It describes 5 stages, 1) the loss of weight, 2) auto-esteem and weight, 3) starving behaviour, 4) physiological consequences, and 5) psychological consequences, the mind only focussing on weight loss. Precipitating factors activate the process and opportune diagnosis and treatment can begin the recovery phase.
