Abstract

Introduction: Breast milk (BM) is an ideal food for infants. In addition to the protective factors, the infant can be infected during breastfeeding, the LM itself being the source of contagion. Viruses are present in colostrum, but in some cases, there is no proven vertical transmission as in the case of respiratory viruses. Little is known about the excretion of arboviruses that infect the maternal organism.

Objective: to investigate the presence of virus in human colostrum samples from healthy postpartum women in the immediate postpartum period.

Methods: Cross-sectional, observational and descriptive study carried out in a convenience sample of postpartum women older than 18 years of age, healthy and without febrile illness in the last trimester of pregnancy in the immediate postpartum period at the Maternity Hospital of Santa Casa de São Carlos (State of São Paulo, Brazil), who consented to their participation in writing in the period between 04/01/2018 to 12/20/2018. Verification was performed through nucleic acid extraction and qualitative virus detection by RT-PCR. Descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage) were used to present the results.

Results: Samples (one ml) of colostrum from 208 postpartum women were obtained. The presence of respiratory virus genomes was observed in 53 samples (25.5%%), with Influenza A being the most prevalent (13 samples; 6.2%); in 11 samples (5.3% - 11/208) the detection of more than one viral genome was observed. Rhinovirus was isolated from a colostrum sample.

Conclusion: Respiratory virus genomes were observed in a quarter of the colostrum samples, with Rhinovirus being isolated in one of them.
