Abstract
Background: Symptoms and disorders are relevant mental health problems in adolescents, impacting in the present and future development of the person.
Objective: Estimate the prevalence of anxiety and depressive symptoms in adolescents.
Method: We assessed a representative sample of 700 adolescents in Concepción, using the review version of Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI-II) and Beck’s Anxiety Inventory (BAI).
Results: The prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms was 32,6% and 42,3%, respectively.
Conclusions: These rates are in concordance with other Chilean studies and are clearly higher than foreign studies with similar samples. It is necessary to understand the causes and implications of high level discomfort in Chilean adolescents. There is a clear need to develop strategies to improve the emotional status in this particular group.
