Abstract

Objective: To present our experience in the management of fungal infections of central venous lines in paedriatric haematological-oncological patients.

Methods: A retrospective study carried out between January 1998 and December 1999 at the Division of Pediatrics, Valdivia Hospital.

Results: Of 19 children with a central venous line, 8 presented with a central line infection, of which 5 were caused by Candida. They presented with fever. The average length of catheter implantation was 208 days (range 92-451). The rate per 1 000 days for fungal infection using the Hickman line was 1.9‰. All were treated with line removal and antifungal therapy.

Conclusions: Candida is the main cause of fungal line infections and the appropriate treatment is early line removal and antifungal therapy.
