Abstract
Functional constipation in children is a common disorder that affects a large proportion of the population worldwide, with a significant impact on the quality of life of both patients and their families. Despite conventional strategies, such as the use of laxatives and dietary modifications, many children continue to experience persistent symptoms.
Objective: To conduct a narrative review of therapeutic strategies for the management of functional constipation in children, evaluating their efficacy and safety.
Material and Method: A review of scientific literature published between 2020 and 2025 was carried out using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, following SANRA criteria. Studies with high methodological quality were selected, including clinical trials, systematic reviews, and clinical guidelines.
Results: Various therapeutic strategies were identified, such as the use of prebiotics, probiotics, new pharmacological formulations, and combination therapies, which have shown effectiveness in treating functional constipation.
Conclusions: Pediatric functional constipation significantly affects quality of life. Its management should be individualized, focusing on lifestyle changes, family education, diet, and pharmacological treatment.
