Abstract

Objective: To estimate the structure and magnitude of costs from services delivered to children with myelomeningocele during 2004 at Teletón Institutes of Chile.

Method: Costs were calculated for the total number of children with myelomeningocele attending our Institution during 2004. The number and costs of professional services was determined, also for surgeries, wheel-chairs, orthesis, day-beds and clinical support. The total cost per child per year was obtained from the sum of the total annual cost average for each of the services, distributed by coverage.

Results: 1376 children were assisted, 55% were female between 6 and 13 years-old and 67% of cases belonged to an extreme poor segment. The total annual cost average per child is $ 724 418, where 62.4% are attributed to different types of health professional assistances.

Conclusion: The annual cost average per child with myelomeningocele for an integral rehabilitation at the Teletón Institute is $ 724 418. This money does not consider indirect costs nor health resources provided externally.
