Abstract
General aspects of paedriatric cancer are analyzed in order to be utilized by general paediatricians. In Chile the importance of paedriatric cancer has increased due to the progress in the treatment of other diseases (malnutrition and infections) and for the great advances in cancer therapy for children. Early diagnosis is emphasized, PINDA the national paedriatric cancer program is briefly described and the Chilean Paedriatric Cooperative Group. Since 1988 more than 4 000 patients have been enrolled by PINDA. General cure rate reaches 65%. The different methods of therapy are revised. It is emphasized the importance of comprehensive treatment including psychological support and palliative efforts. The national results of the last 40 years in relation to acute leukaemia are described. It is remarkable the continuous progress achieved. PINDA´s results obtained in the last 10 years are comparable to the results in developed countries.
